NECK AND NECK: On Monday night, the varsity volleyball team lost to Killeen Shoemaker at home in its first non-district game. The Knights battled the Grey Wolves and kept the sets close but ultimately the visitors prevailed, winning 25-19, 25-19, 25-23.

Junior Jordyn Berger said energy and drive motivated the team but also faltered at some points during the match.

“At the beginning, we had a lot of energy which started us off good, but after we lost the first set, we kind of got into a hole,” Berger said. “No one was saying anything on the court, which brought us down, but we got more energy when we were starting to come back at the end.”

Berger believes that the energy fluctuation could be solved by developing more chemistry between the players.

Another challenge the Knights faced was the fact that their roster has changed a lot from last year. With 11 seniors graduating, only four varsity players remain from last year's undefeated district championship team. Returning varsity player, sophomore Lexi Rosenblatt said the roster turnover affected the game.

“We’re still learning how to lean on each other and work as a team, but we’re getting there,” Rosenblatt said. “It’s definitely harder to get that team chemistry than it was last year simply because we haven’t played together as long, but most of us played together all offseason, and a lot of the team played together on JV last year, so we are quickly getting that team chemistry back.”

Although this was not the start the Knights wanted, this game allowed the team to play against a tough opposition to learn what worked and what didn’t.

“Killeen Shoemaker was a great competitive opponent who didn’t let up the whole game and made it really difficult to score,” Rosenblatt said. “But overall, it was still a really fun match and a good learning experience for us as a team.”

The Knights traveled to Belton and lost 3-0 in three tightly contested sets on Tuesday.

Junior Kai Talebi noticed a drastic change in the team's ability to counter Belton’s offense. But, she also sees room for improvement when the Knights are serving.
