EBONY TOPS IVORY: The Knights didn’t have an opponent the week the varsity beat LASA, but that didn’t mean the sub-varsity teams were idle. Far from it.

Instead of playing another school, the JV squads subdivided into two squads and played each other in what was hailed as The Gammerdinger Bowl in deference to head coach and athletic director Thomas Gammerdinger, a.k.a. Coach G.

Let the record show that Coach Rodger’s squad in the BLACK jerseys won the intrasquad battle over Coach Osorio’s team in the WHITE JERSEYS. The game ball would have to go to BLACK running back Xaive Stevenson who rushed for all three touchdowns scored in the game. The BLACK squad was two of three on two-point conversions to make the final score, BLACK 22, WHITE 0.

Stevenson said the game’s energy pushed him to play his best.

“The tension was really here tonight,” he said after the game. “I just wanted to come out and do what I do best, nothing extra to it. I wanted to put as many points on the board as I could.”

A two-way player, Stevenson said he was most proud of his offensive output in the game.

“Playing corner for defense was really fun, but going out and scoring three touchdowns tonight [set] the tone in the first half for my team, and dominating the white team was the goal today. Our team’s coaches Amy and Rodgers tried to get me the ball any chance they could, and that really gave me a chance to show what I could do. Our run game could not be stopped, and our team mechanics together were really there tonight.”

Coach Rodgers' BLACK squad also had some defensive standouts, among them defensive linemen Mauricio Esparza and Dylan Fissel who pushed the WHITE squad into an early hole with back to back sacks that led to a fourth down and 20 and a turnover on downs.

“The defensive line had lots of energy throughout the game,” Esparza told MacJ. “Dylan and I really gave the quarterback pressure in the backfield, not giving them time to get a play off. My team just had more energy and big plays to set the tone.”

While they were enemies during the scrimmage, Esparza had nothing but respect for the teammates who played for the WHITE team.
