‘TEARING’ THROUGH THE COMPETITION: The @mccallumband made straight 1’s at the UIL 5A Region 18 Competition on Tuesday, Oct. 17, qualifying it to advance to the area competition at the Pfield this Saturday.

The first three-and-a-half movements ran smoothly, according to band director Dillon Junkin; however, during the fourth movement, the band experienced a “tear” in the music.

“A tear is when you are in a band and the timing between different members of the band becomes off,” senior trombone soloist Benji Owens said. “Some members of the band think that they are in a different measure or count in the music than other members, so they may play or march ahead or behind everyone else.”

The tear occurred as Owens was beginning his solo. The brass, woodwinds and drum majors became out of sync.

“[The clarinets] start 32 beats ahead of me,” Owens said. “From my perspective, they rushed on the running notes, and I've heard from a lot of people that the drum majors were conducting a little slow, probably trying to get the clarinets back on track. So it all adds up. I decided to go with the drum majors, but looking back I should’ve gone with the clarinets, so it would sound better.”

Owens reasoned that the lack of practice time of movement four on the football field may have contributed to the issues experienced.

“A lot of our newer members are still not as confident playing on a real field without placement dots like we have in the parking lot, so we all need to work on using the field lines as reference and getting more comfortable with that,” Owens said.

Despite the tear, the band still ended up placing with the straight 1’s necessary to move on to the area round. Senior drum major Malena Linse was not confident that the band would advance to area following the initial show.

“It was a moment of panic,” Linse said. “We were not confident originally that we would make 1’s. I was actually near the bathrooms when we heard the announcement that we had made 1’s, and I was just glad like ‘Oh OK we didn’t mess up that bad.’”
