Prior to the Knights huge district-opening win at LBJ last night, the varsity took a practice test of sorts, a non-district road challenge at Austin High. While the team fell to the Maroons 60-45 on Tuesday of last week, the experience no doubt helped them prepare for the more crucial district test at LBJ they would pass last night with flying colors.

Prior to the game against Austin High a week ago, senior Finn Corrigan knew the Maroons would be difficult to beat and that the team needed to step up and play as a team.

“We knew it'd be tough,” Corrigan said. “We just had to execute and we didn't.”

The Knights struggled in the first half and went into halftime trailing, 31-17.

George Brode sent Austin High an early second half message that the Knights were going to find another gear in the second half by draining a 3-pointer on the Knights’ first possession of the half.

While the Knights followed through on that initial promise, battling the Maroons evenly in the second half, the final margin—60-45—did not change significantly from the halftime margin. In the end, however, the players and coaches saw the game for what it was: good practice for district games that count.

“This is all just preparing us” for the district season, Corrigan said. “We want to win, but really it doesn't matter for playoffs. It's good practice.”

The coaches felt the same way about the Austin High game.

“It was a disappointing loss since we were very excited for this game,” assistant basketball coach Terrance Carson told MacJ after the game, “but we will learn from mistakes and execute better next week.”

Last night’s result makes Carson look like a prophet. But he had reason to feel the Knights were ready for LBJ because the Knights put in the work this past weekend at the Marble Falls tournament where they competed so well on the first day of the tournament that they qualified for the top bracket (gold) in the tournament’s knockout round.

Clearly that experience was an effective study session on the hardwood because the Knights beat LBJ decisively on the road last night to send a clear message to the district about their intentions for the rest of the district season.
