On Friday, Dec. 8, the JV girls’ soccer team opened their season with a scrimmage versus Anderson at Anderson’s Calhoun Field.

The Lady Knights found themselves down within the first 15 seconds of the game due to a cross that was tapped over sophomore keeper Maggie Gravette’s hands. After a failed cross that hit the post and went in, the Knights found themselves down 2-0 going into halftime.

For returning player sophomore Penelope Johnson, the halftime talk was a time for the new coach, Catherine O’Neal, to keep the positivity going into the second half.

“She was very positive about how we can still get back from being two down,” Johnson said. “She mostly let us talk about our thoughts too.”

The Knights didn’t concede in the second half until the last 15 seconds of the game when a Trojan midfielder played a through ball to their forward who took a touch around Gravette was buried it in the back of the net.

Even though the Knights lost, 3-0, freshman Isabel Perez said that the game went well for the JV Knights’ first match.

“I think we could have talked a little bit more but, this was our first time playing as a team,” said Perez. “I think we did very well, especially against Anderson.”

Looking towards the rest of the season and the next few scrimmages, Perez is hopeful about the future of this team.

“My personal goal for the team is probably to make more passes with each other and just communicate and just be better as a team,” Perez said.

Johnson also took this opportunity as a chance to see what the team needed to work on for the future.

“It was a good start to the season and showed us what we need to work on going forward,” Johnson said. “More communication and knowing the correct spacing will help us in the upcoming season.”
