JV GIRLS SOCCER HOSTS TOURNAMENT: The JV girls soccer team hosted its annual tournament last Wednesday and Thursday. The 2024 edition of the tournament had nine schools participating, and McCallum placed third overall.

To kick off the tournament the Knights played their first game against Manor, whom they had played a few weeks prior in a pre-season scrimmage. McCallum got off on the right foot with a a decisive 8-0 victory over the Mustangs.

Later on in the day, the Knights played Bowie and suffered a 5-1 loss.

On Thursday, the team played LASA in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, LASA managed to score four goals to McCallum’s one to advance to the finals and end the Knights’ hopes of winning their own tournament.
Sophomore Ruby Johnson said the tournament did not go as she had hoped it would but that it still was a valuable experience for her and her teammates.

“It didn’t go as well as we had wanted it to because we lacked practice over the break,” Johnson said. “But I also think that it [the tournament] gave us a sense of how the season is going to go and what we need to work on.”

Johnson, a defender, felt the back line needed more practice and improvement.

“I think I need to be able to get organized with the rest of the defenders,” she said, “because that disorganization is how they [opposing teams] were able to get past us and score.”

Another factor in the Knights’ defeat was absence of their starting goalkeeper, which forced the team to rely on keepers who had less experience playing the position.

“Not having [our regular] goalie definitely affected the scores,” Johnson said. “We had to rotate people to be goalie, and most people hadn’t really played it before.”

Although Johnson was disappointed with the outcome, she still sees a silver lining: an opportunity for the team to learn and grow.

“I think we can improve for the season with more practice, especially just working on our formation,” Johnson said.
