The guitar program held its annual Battle of the Bands fundraiser last Thursday. At Battle of the Bands, local bands compete for the opportunity to perform at Hole in the Wall. This year’s winners were Red River Trucking Co. in first place, followed by Henry Jewesson’s solo act in second. 

Spiral Maze, a local teen band played the opening slot at the 2024 Battle of the Bands fundraiser. 

Known for his guitar and vocals for the band, Zane Shieh took the stage and put on a show for a very enthusiastic crowd.

“It was a lot of fun playing for people from school, I don’t see a lot of them at other performances,” Shieh said.

After Spiral Maze, other bands took to the stage, each with a mix of original music and covers. For Nest, a punk band, the Battle of the Bands opportunity marked their first time performing for an audience.

Senior Avery Atkinson, Nest’s bass player, was taken back by the moment when swarms of students flocked to the stage during performance, and inspired the formation of a mosh. 

“The crowd coming up to the stage was definitely shocking, I didn’t expect that for our first time performing,” Atkinson said.

The members of Nest have only been playing together for about a month and a half and already have two original pieces that were performed.

On drums for Nest, was sophomore Dustin Stanley, who is excited that people got a taste of nests genre, giving the band a solid start.

“It’s cool our first time performing is at Mac,” said Stanley, “I’m glad we got to play our originals, we’ve been working hard the past few weeks to prepare.”

Battle of the Bands is an excellent opportunity for student musicians to showcase their talents in a competitive and creative atmosphere. This year’s winners will be preforming at Hole in the Wall on Feb. 25.
