The varsity girls soccer team had the odds stacked against them coming into their Wednesday matchup against the Ann Richards Stars. Not only did they have to face district leaders in Ann Richards but they had to do it with a fill-in coach: varsity football coach Thomas Gammerdinger.

The Knights' semiannual matchup against Ann Richards has recently been a deciding factor of who is to claim the first place spot for district. Last year, the Knights lost 6-0 in their first meeting with the Stars, but won 3-2 in their second, finishing third in district.

Going into this game, senior Kat Klein said that the team was eager to knock the Stars off and claim the top spot in the district standings.

"I was very excited going into the game," Klein said. "I think that the team was very motivated to win and to take first place in district. I expected Ann Richards to be a tough team to play, and they were. They are an overall very good team with not many weaknesses, which made it difficult for us to create good opportunities."

Klein scored the game's only goal. With 13 minutes left in the game, junior Ashley Mankinen curved the ball past the Stars' defense, leaving Klein to run straight to goal.

"I always want to try to score or assist my teammates," Klein said. "But in tougher games like Ann Richards, you have more of a defensive responsibility as well. I just tried to keep my intensity high the whole game and do what my team needed me to do."

The rest of the game remained scoreless, and the Knights' secured the win, 1-0. Sophomore Ava Dallesandro credits Gammerdinger with getting the team mentally ready for the Stars.

"Gammerdinger was really hyping us up before the game," Dallesandro said. "He let us know straight up that one of his non-negotiables was that everyone needed to be giving 100% effort."

Dallesandro also said that the shutout against Ann Richards proves that the Knights are ready for something bigger.

"Beating them proves that we are the strongest team in our district," Dallesandro said.

The win over Ann Richards improves the Knights district record to 7-0-1, as well as putting them in first place.
