Filipinx History 🍎📖 MARINEROS aka Seafarers ⛴️🎣👷🏾‍♂️👷🏾

These heroes whose livelihood comes from working on ships, are typically contracted to work at sea for several months, years at a time. This includes the deckhands cleaning the engine room, to the chief engineer; and these boats can be anything from commercial fishing to interactional cargo - a very common job for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). 

At the end of  year, at least 24 Filipino seafarers were effectively abandoned after their ship docked in Westport. They were recruited by Manila-based agency Pescadores International and contracted by the US-based fishing company McAdams fish. Back in September, after four months of fishing for tuna all along the west coast, they docked in Westport to unload their catch. Since then, all but one captain left the boats while the fishermen themselves were not allowed to disembark because they were not properly prepared with US Visas. 

From September to through December, they remained on the boats in Westport with no communications or updates from either Pescadores or McAdams about their contracts, or any info about how or when they’d be able to go home. And on top of all that, the pay they were promised has yet to be fulfilled and they’re sinking into more debt having to pay for their own equipment and necessities. 

Six of the fishermen came together as the United 6 to fight for their rights and demand accountability: from their contractor, employer, and from the PH govt and US govt to ensure that OFWs are protected and don’t have to go through this injustice again.
