Today we highlight the inspiring story behind 2023 Black Ambition Prize Winner, Karl Franz Williams, Founder and CEO of Uncle Waithley’s. 

“In the heart of Black History Month, I’m excited to share a meaningful chapter of my family’s history—the legacy of my grandfather Waithley Wilson Williams affectionately known by all as
Uncle Waithley. 

Hailing from the vibrant landscapes of St. Vincent, Uncle Waithley was not only a respected ginger, banana and nutmeg farmer; he was a community visionary, one of the first five members of his local government village council, and a fierce advocate for education. His commitment to people was unparalleled, a sentiment that resonates deeply with the spirit of Black Ambition and our brand. 

A true self-starter, Uncle Waithley believed in the transformative power of grassroots efforts and community-building. His life was a testament to the idea that individual vision could uplift an entire community. In his local community he helped to found an elementary school and built one of the first churches. He was always dedicated to service.

Beyond his altruism, passion for community and love for family, there was a belief in the principles of healthy living. My grandfather lived to the ripe age of 100 leaving behind a blueprint for a healthy and productive life. He instilled in each of his 13 children including my father knowledge that they passed on to me. My father is still passionate about making natural beverages that he markets in St. Vincent, which celebrate the richness of the agriculture, land, and unique vegetation of the island. This commitment has become the guiding force behind me wanting to honor my family heritage and walk in my grandfather’s footsteps.

My grandfather’s legacy is a beacon of inspiration that encourages us to uplift, inspire, and create with purpose. That is true Black Ambition in my opinion.”
