The 59kg class at Classic Nationals will witness the return of a world champion, as well as a battle for podium placings. Here are the best recent totals of the top nominees:

Wascar Carpio 625kg (1,377lbs)
Scott Silva 507.5kg (1,118lbs)
Alex Thielemier 505kg (1,113lbs)

The prospective battle with Silva and Thielemier could not be closer. These men are nominated so tightly–within 2.5kg of each other–and this will be both of their first encounters with the national stage. Silva is still a junior electing to compete in the open, while Thielemier has only competed in the 66kg class and will likely need to cut down. Who will come out on top?

It is no shock, however, that Carpio is the heavy favorite for the overall crown as he was last year’s national champion and is in a league of his own with a best total of 625kg. His 2023 season solidified himself as the best 59kg lifter in the world with his first world title win in Malta. However–he just missed out on his Sheffield invitation by barely falling short from the 95% mark of the world record total. He was inches away from locking out his final deadlift to secure the invite before missing it on grip.

Carpio is surely coming back for revenge in 2024. The first step is punching his ticket to this year’s Classic Worlds by winning Classic Nationals and totaling at least 569.5kg. This is a weight he will plausibly be able to hit on his opening deadlift.

But how far will he push the total? Is he looking to hit 636.5kg–the total that would have qualified him for Sheffield? Or is he thinking beyond that and vying to get as close as he can to the world record total, which sits at a massive 669.5kg? Tune in on Thursday, March 14 on the @sbdapparel YouTube page to find out.
