The 52kg class at Classic Nationals will see the return of the reigning national champion, where she will be facing stiff competition to defend her title. Here are the best recent totals of the competitors:

Megan Hurlburt 447.5kg (986lbs)
Jamie Fisher 410.5kg (904lbs)
Vanessa Pineda 405kg (892lbs)
Leah Goldring 402.5kg (887lbs)

This class is full of several question marks with every lifter. First up, we have Pineda and Goldring, who have put up totals only 2.5kg apart from each other. They have similar stories coming in. Pineda did not compete for a little over a year before doing her first Powerlifting America meet and setting a 12.5kg PR total of 405kg. Goldring took a break from the platform for some two years, before returning with a 15kg PR total of 402.5kg. Their best deadlifts are close as well, so it will be interesting to see who will pull last and can manage to pull ahead of the other.

Next we have Fisher, last year’s 52kg national champion, nominated in second. The national bench press record is hers at 103kg, and she will surely be looking to bump this higher. She has demonstrated the potential to hit even bigger weights; she has hit a monstrous 110.5kg bench, over two times her bodyweight, before the introduction of new bench rules in 2023. Will this be a tight battle for the podium, or has Fisher adapted to the new rule enough to break into new territory?

Rounding out the group, Megan Hurlburt is the biggest wildcard, moving into the 52kg division and bringing with her a huge 447.5kg total from the 57kg class. While she has never competed in the 52kg class, she had intended to face off against Fisher at last year’s Nationals, but instead elected to compete as a guest lifter. Her training is looking strong, and if she can maintain her strength, it would place her amongst the best 52kg lifters in the world.

Will this class be a close battle or will we see a runaway winner emerge? Tune in on Thursday, March 14 on the @sbdapparel YouTube page to find out.
