The 57kg class at Classic Nationals will hold two lifters contending for the national title. Here are the best recent totals of the nominees:

Kaye Johnson 390kg (859lbs)
Jiaqi Chen 337.5kg (744lbs)

Chen is looking to secure the silver overall position at her Nationals debut. She is a newcomer to the sport, having only competed in England twice during the past year. She is now joining Powerlifting America, and it will be exciting to see her progress considering she only just entered the sport around a year ago.

But Johnson, even though she is also relatively new to competing, is more experienced and holds the higher total between the two. She took the bronze overall at last year’s Classic Nationals, and now will be vying to move up to the top placing. After 2023 Nationals, she went on to collect some invaluable experience at an international competition by competing in the NAPF Championships and taking the overall silver medal. It is clear that she is the heavy favorite for the national title. Has she progressed enough to cross over the 400kg total milestone?

These lifters will likely not be contending for a ticket to Classic Worlds, as Natalie Richards has set the highest of standards at Sheffield by hitting a PR total of 516.5kg. She has elected not to compete at Nationals to defend her title, since the highest total between Sheffield and Nationals will receive the Worlds invite. However, Johnson will conceivably be fighting for a qualification to return to this year’s NAPF Championships, which will take place in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Will we see the top contender in Johnson pull far ahead for the title? Or has Chen progressed enough to close the gap between them? Tune in on Thursday, March 14 on the sbdapparel YouTube page to find out.
