In 2003, Richard Schick, formerly employed by the Illinois Department of Public Aid, took legal action against the organization, alleging he was a victim of sexual and disability discrimination. He demanded $5 million in damages alongside $166,700 for unpaid wages.

Overwhelmed by depression due to these allegations, Schick resorted to an extreme measure by robbing a convenience store with a shotgun, a decision he attributed to his deteriorating mental health. The jury, empathizing with Schick's distress, ultimately ruled in his favor, granting him the full amount of compensation he had requested.
