By the time this century wraps up, experts predict that the amount of plastic lurking in our seas could skyrocket to a staggering 50 times what it is today. Just picture that: tiny fragments of plastic infiltrating marine ecosystems, sneaking into the homes of countless underwater creatures, disrupting their habitats, and posing a grave threat to their very existence.

These minuscule plastic particles might seem harmless at first glance, but their impact is anything but that. Marine life, from majestic whales to delicate corals, is facing an unprecedented challenge as they navigate through a sea of plastic pollution. From entanglement to ingestion, the consequences of marine plastic pollution are dire. Animals get tangled up in discarded fishing nets, unable to break free. Meanwhile, others mistake plastic bits for food, filling their stomachs with toxic pollutants instead of nourishment.

But it’s not just the marine life that’s at risk—it’s our own future too. As plastic pollution continues to spiral out of control, it doesn’t just disappear into the depths of the ocean. It comes back to haunt us, showing up in our seafood, contaminating our water sources, and even infiltrating the air we breathe. The solution lies in refusing single-use plastic when you can and making reuse a habit, supporting legislation that holds polluters accountable, and supporting businesses that use plastic-free principles like using nontoxic regenerative materials and reuse and refill systems. It’s time to rethink our relationship with plastic and work towards a future where our ocean can thrive once again, free from the grip of plastic pollution.

At fromthebowseat and plasticpollutes we are committed to creating awareness around this #plasticproblem. We’re thrilled to introduce you to a stunning collection of artwork created by talented students from across the globe, all a part of Bow Seat’s Ocean Awareness Contest. These young artists have poured their hearts and souls into their creations, offering unique perspectives on #oceanplastics
