According to the Filipino media, the Philippines national team is set to call up two dual-national MLS players this month— San Jose Earthquakes’ Michael Baldisimo and St. Louis City’s Anthony Markanich.

Their brothers Matthew Baldisimo and Nick Markanich are also expected to be called up.

The Baldisimo brothers are Filipino-Canadians, while the Markanich brothers are Filipino-Americans. 🇵🇭🇨🇦🇺🇸

Michael spent his career in Vancouver Whitecaps, before signing for San Jose last summer. Matthew is with York United.

The Markanich brothers, on the other hand, are from Illinois and came through the Chicago Fire academy.

Anthony is now with St. Louis after leaving Colorado Rapids, Nick is with Charleston Battery after leaving FC Cincinnati.

The Philippines started calling up dual-nationals in 2010, although they mainly focused on European players. Now, they’ve set their sights on North American players of Filipino descent.

Their women’s team called up 18 Filipino-Americans in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

With the expanded World Cup, up to nine teams from Asia can qualify for 2026.

The Philippines are currently in the second qualifying round with Iraq, and fellow Southeast Asian rivals Indonesia and Vietnam.

A realistic chance to reach the third round, and anything can happen from there.
