Maria has been working for Victoria Police for nearly 24 years.⁣
⁣
And over those years, she’s held 18 positions across various HR areas, including projects, consulting and workplace relations.  Currently, she’s a portfolio manager within the Human Resources Command. It’s safe to say, she’s seen it all.⁣
⁣
So, when asked what this year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Inspiring inclusion,’ means to her, she said it’s about “Embracing all women from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, ability and faith.”⁣
⁣
Having worked at Victoria Police for more than half her life, Maria has seen the organisation transform and grow.⁣
⁣
Women once represented only 10% of the workforce of 11,000. Since, things have changed for the better, with improved promotional pathways, strategies and conditions such as workplace flexibility.⁣
⁣
She also acknowledges that her experiences at Victoria Police have shaped her into the resilient person she is today. Working in a male-dominated industry has its challenges, but Maria chooses to approach her work with optimism and works to be the positive role model her two young girls need.⁣

For those wishing to join Victoria Police, Maria has one thing to say.⁣
⁣
“Treat others as you would like to be treated”.⁣
⁣
Remaining open-minded, resilient, and respecting others for who they are - regardless of rank, background or gender - she maintains goes miles in a role at Victoria Police.⁣

While there are many pioneers and advocates (both men and women) paving the way for change, there’s still a lot of work to be done to drive gender parity.⁣
