CAUGHT BY SURPRISE: The varsity girls soccer team lost 1-0 to the LASA Raptors tonight at Nelson Field. The Raptors scored the game’s only goal within the first minute of play. Sophomore center back Sienna Gunning felt that although the Knights got off to an unfortunate start, they showed their strength for the rest of the game.

“In my opinion, we were the better team,” Gunning said. “We slipped in the beginning, but we controlled the rest of the game. [When LASA scored it was because] we were caught off guard and weren’t pressing.”

After the Raptors’ goal, however, Gunning said the Knights came back stronger and did a good job of keeping their effort up — both offensively and defensively — throughout the game.

“It was kind of like a reality check,” she said. “It was a check that we were playing a game. It was not anyone’s fault in particular, but it just kind of woke us up.”

Tonight’s game was the Knights’ second matchup against LASA this season after tying them 1-1 on Jan. 24. While Gunning feels that the Knights outplayed the Raptors in this game, she said the teams are generally an even match.

“They definitely got a little bit better [since last time],” Gunning said. “I would consider them a big rival. They’re running against us for first in district, and they’re the most equal team [to McCallum] out of the district.”

Gunning said tonight’s game showed the team how to take a loss, but also to look forward to playing tougher competitors as the season presses on.

“It helped us realize what playoffs will be like,” she said. “It helped us get our heads in the game again because there are really good teams out there.”

The Knights take on the Eastside Panthers next Tuesday 6 p.m. at House Park.
