The sinking of the #Rubymar cargo ship in the Red Sea poses grave environmental risks.

As well as any further leaks of fuel oil from the engines, the sinking of the vessel could further breach the hull. Thousands of tonnes of fertiliser being carried by the ship are threatening to spill into the Red Sea.

This could disrupt the balance of the marine ecosystems, triggering cascading effects throughout the food web. According to the Yemeni government’s environmental protection agency, this “double pollution” that could affect 78,000 fishers and their families – up to half a million people.

Immediate access to the shipwreck site is imperative for an expert response team to assess the situation and swiftly devise and implement an emergency plan.
