👨‍🚒 How much do FDNY firefighters make? (2023-24)

Starting base pay for FDNY firefighters is $47,400 per year in 2023. With 2023 rates, after 1.5 years, your salary would have gone up to $49,700 per year. And at 4.5 years, it would be $65,700 per year. You then would have each top base pay in 5.5 years, which would have been $92,000 per year.

Now, FDNY states that someone at top pay would receive about $25,000 in fringe pay per year with fringe pay including things like night differentials but not overtime. So without overtime in 2023, a top FDNY firefighter would have made $117,000 per year.

Now, FDNY firefighters did sign a new contract and by the end of the contract, starting pay should be $55,600 per year. Top base pay after 5.5 years should be $109,400 per year. With fringe pay without overtime, top pay should be $139,500 per year. Now, even though firefighters don’t do this job for the pay, I do believe that they should be paid well.

Now, going back to the 2023 numbers, since salaries in New York are transparent, let’s see how much firefighters made with overtime. Now, there are over 8,500 firefighters out there that are non-lieutenant or above. And of those, about 4,500 firefighters made more than $140,000 per year with overtime in 2023. And close to 1,300 firefighters made more than $170,000 per year.
