Meet Jennifer! Jennifer Banda (40) lives in Malawi, in the community of Jonas, where The Sonder Project drilled a deep-water well in 2021. Blessed with 6 children ranging in age from 5 to 22 years, Jennifer’s schedule can be quite demanding.

So it’s incomprehensible to imagine that Jennifer used to spend a minimum of 3 - 4 hours per day collecting water from a stream several kilometers away before the well was drilled.

Aside from the distance, the water at the stream, where animals would come to drink and bathe, was never truly clean. Water-borne illnesses like diarrhea were a common occurrence in Jennifer’s household.

The situation would become even worse in the rainy season when mud and other runoff would make the stream completely unusable or unreachable. In these moments, Jennifer’s responsibility for providing her family with water was insufferable.

Her family would go hungry, not being able to cook for several days, and they would need to rely on rainwater collected from a neighbor’s rooftop to have any water at all. “We used to suffer so much,” Jennifer told us.

“But now we are at peace. We are thankful to everyone who donated to help us get clean water.” These days, Jennifer’s walk to the new well is less than 30 minutes and she or her children can go and collect water anytime they please. Water-borne diseases have disappeared, and the family is eating better and saving money thanks to being able to maintain a small vegetable garden at home.

Jennifer sums it up for us: “Life is much easier, and we are much healthier.”

Help a family like Jennifer's to get access to clean water by making a donation at the link in our bio!
