This week marks the 10th anniversary that Bare Feet first aired EVER on TV, on NYC Life.  A woman took that chance on me - she said YES when everyone else said NO.  And the opportunity to give platform to the women in my family through this Bare Feet Journey has been an honor and a privilege.

Most of you know of my Nonna Pina - you saw her in my very first pilot episode in Minturno, Italy - another talented and caring women was behind the camera capturing her beauty.  Nonna housed us in her little farm house while filming, she fed us, and she even taught me (and all of you) how to make one of my favorite dishes, which she learned from her mother and her mother’s mother before. 

One of these photos is from my very first time traveling to Minturno - I was 2 years old, visiting with my family.  This photo represents 4 generations of the powerful and resilient women in my life - my great-grandmother in the background, my Nonna teaching me how to slaughter a chicken, my sister with my Nonno, and my mother taking the photo.  This was my first experience in Minturno, the place where EVERYTHING started for me.

I say this a lot in my public talks - the word “travel” comes from the French word “travailler” which means “to work”. Travel isn’t meant to be easy, and understanding that being part of the local community when traveling was instilled in me from the beginning. This is what travel has ALWAYS meant to me, and it’s no surprise that I made travel part of my job. 

To all of of the women (and men) who helped me get to where I am today - THANK YOU!  Happy #InternationalWomensDay - and may you find stories of women in your own life and continue to share them with the world!
