In the past I never would have posted any pictures like this because they’re not “perfect”, they show my insecurities. Sometimes I forget that social media is not an accurate representation of what someone’s life really looks like, social media is the best photos that people want to share at the best angles. As a gymnast you are constantly being judged on how you look, whether that is about your form in a skill or other people’s perception on what a gymnast should look like. Being a college gymnast means that you have little girls looking up to you and aspiring to be in your position later on in their lives. When I was a little girl I loved looking up to the college girls and thought they were the coolest people I’ve ever seen. With the opportunity I have been given to live out my dreams at the college level, I want to be a positive role model for anyone who crosses paths with me. Remember that everyone is uniquely different in their own way. Comparison will only do damage to your mind, you were wonderfully made and made with purpose. We need to start celebrating what our bodies CAN do and NOT what they look like. My face may look funny in the photo, it may not be my best angle, and I may have cellulite but this body allows me to do the sport I love and I will celebrate that as long as I can. Yes it is still so hard to not compare myself to others, but day by day you can learn to love your body more and more. To you, you may not even notice this stuff, but to me it’s important that I step out of my comfort zone because if I don’t I’ll never grow. Also, I want to use my voice to create a safe environment so this may seem small or even silly to you but it’s a big leap for me and hopefully this gets to someone who needed to hear it.
