Today, on highlight of other #MyClimateHero, we have Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a marine biologist, policy expert, and conservation strategist. She is the co-founder of Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank for ocean-climate policy in coastal cities, and the Roux Distinguished Scholar at Bowdoin College. Her inspiring work has not only shaped the discourse around environmental conservation but has also ignited passion in individuals like Eden George, Sophia Arias and Obii Udemgba, few of our winners of Bow Seat’s 2023 Ocean Awareness Contest.

Eden George’s artwork beautifully captures the essence of Dr. Johnson’s mission, drawing parallels between her own identity as an African American woman from Brooklyn, New York, and the urgent need for representation in the field of marine biology and climate activism. Through her piece, George not only pays homage to Dr. Johnson’s achievements but also sparks a conversation about the importance of diverse voices in environmental advocacy.

Accompanying George’s artwork are equally captivating pieces by other contest winners, including Sophia Arias in creative writing and Obii Udemgba in poetry, all inspired by Dr. Johnson’s impactful contributions.

As all three of these young artists reflect on their creative process, they emphasise the power of representation and hopes to inspire future generations of young women of colour to pursue careers in environmental science. Together, these artworks serve as evidence to @ayanaeliza ’s influence and the transformative potential of her work in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
