State police say a Lafayette man driving a tractor-trailer during "superfog" crash on I-55 was speeding, causing the death of one person. ⁠

The chain reaction of collisions occurred as dense fog blanketed the area and mixed with smoke from nearby marsh fires, dropping visibility to dangerously low levels. ⁠

The Lafayette man was booked on counts of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, reckless operation and other traffic charges. ⁠

He is the first person to be charged in connection with the crash, which injured 63 and killed seven in a 168-car pileup near Manchac. ⁠
