Say hello to Courtesy – she's one of the almost 900 recruits currently training at the Victoria Police Academy. ⁣
⁣
While Courtesy’s first application was unsuccessful, it didn’t deter her – instead leading her in a different direction. ⁣
⁣
Determined to find a role where she could give more back to the community, she started a Diploma of Legal Services where she was accepted into the Magistrates’ Court Trainee Registrar Program – a four-year program that provides insight into managing court processes. ⁣
⁣
Through the program, Courtesy met many officers who encouraged her to give her application a second go and she successfully reapplied at the beginning of 2023. ⁣
⁣
Living 90 minutes from the Victoria Police Academy, Courtesy made the decision to live-in despite being a single mum. She finds it allows her to complete the bulk of her studies during the week, so she can give her two young girls her full attention on the weekends. ⁣
⁣
Now in her 21st week at the Academy, Courtesy says the biggest misconception about the police training is the range of support available to the recruits. ⁣
⁣
“People may think because of their age or gender that they may not be able to keep up with some of the training components, but the instructors at the academy are very supportive and help you improve any areas you feel you are lacking in.” ⁣
⁣
Her advice for those about to go through the recruitment process? ⁣
⁣
“Do not give up – it will all be worth it when you get that email with your start date!” ⁣
⁣
We’re hosting a careers expo on 13 April at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. It's your opportunity to ‘choose your own adventure’ and learn about all the career pathways available to you after graduating from the Academy. ⁣
⁣
We’ll have specialist units on hand to answer your questions and share their experiences in their roles – including instructors from the Academy, Air Wing, Public Order Response Team, as well as Protective Services Officers and Police Custody Officers. ⁣
