With term life insurance, you can get the same amount of coverage for a fraction of the price of a whole life insurance policy. A term policy lasts for a set number of years, that's why it's called "term" insurance (I recommend a 15-20 year term). With it, you pay a low rate each month for the coverage you need. Plus, term coverage is much more affordable, so you can get a policy worth a lot more than whole life... which means your family is even more financially protected during the term.

During the 15-20 year term, if you follow my 7 Baby Steps plan, 3 things will happen:

1. Your kids will grow up and leave.

2. You will pay off all debt, even your mortgage (remember, I recommend no more than a 15-year mortgage)

3. You will save and invest at least 15% of your income.

So, you are 15-20 years older with no kids to feed, no debt, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in retirement... you are set. If you die with no life insurance, your family will be just fine. The only person who thinks you would need life insurance at that point is a whole life insurance agent who wants to get a commission for your WHOLE life.

If you currently have whole life insurance, but are thinking of switching to term, DO NOT cancel it UNTIL you've got your new term policy in place! Be safe, and smart about something like this.
