You earned every bit of it, but you withheld too much from your paycheck for taxes. That's normal, but if you get a big refund this year, all you need to do going forward is adjust your withholding with your employer on your W-4 form. They can easily help you do that, so you can keep more of your money in YOUR hands. Even a simple savings account making 0.2% interest would have been a better financial decision than earning nothing and not even having access to that money.
