STUDENTS: If you’re planning on taking college classes during the 2022–2023 academic year, you can file your FAFSA starting TODAY - October 1, 2021.

FAFSA stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It determines your eligibility for financial aid like grants, scholarships, and yes, even student loans. DON’T accept an offer for a student loan after you fill out the FAFSA, but DO accept any grants or scholarships you might get. That’s free money and it will help you steer clear of students loans. You can go to studentaid.gov to fill out the form.

File your FAFSA as close as possible to this October 1 start date. The sooner you file, you’ll likely qualify for more scholarships, grants and other types of financial aid. If you wait too long, you’ll end up with whatever is left over after everyone else gets their aid, which might not be much.

The last day to apply for FAFSA is usually on the last day of the academic year—which is June 30. So, the last day to file for the 2022–2023 academic year will be June 30, 2023. Yes, that’s a long time from now, but the earlier you apply, the more chance you have to get grants and scholarships, so get this taken care of now. If you haven’t yet filed for this current school year (2021 - 2022), you still have until June 30, 2022. You might have missed out on most of this year’s financial aid, but not all hope is lost. You could still qualify for federal grants that could be used retroactively to cover what you’ve already paid for, and some schools might let you use some of the money you receive to pay for summer classes.

Please don’t take out student loans to go to school. I want your future to be owned by YOU, not a lender that you’d be making payments to for decades to come. My team just completed an entire documentary that exposes how the student loan industry was built to work against you. It’s called Borrowed Future. Watch it October 14 on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV or Google Play.
