Leading up to January 2020, Imani and I made a plan to attack our debt with “gazelle-like intensity” as daveramsey would say it. Led by the Holy Spirit, we began taking steps toward the goal. I was all in and committed, but Imani had some hesitations. She struggled with budgeting and delayed gratification (her words, not mine 😅). But together, we leaned on God’s Word, specifically verses like “Humility and fear of the LORD, results in wealth, honor, and life” (Proverbs 22:4) and “...the borrower is a slave to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7b). After prayer, zero-based budgeting, discipline, taking advantage of the student loan COVID forbearance, working extra jobs/shifts, a few distractions, prayer (again), encouraging one another, and trusting God... by His provision and oversight we accomplished the goal!

Becoming free of consumer debt is a blessing, but seeing how God sustained us through unemployment during the pandemic, changing our hearts towards financial stewardship, and growing us in our giving has reinforced our dependence on the Lord. Now the plan is: (1) to share the knowledge with our family (and others) while supporting them in their debt-free journey; (2) to live, give, and invest like never before!

NOTE: By no means are we rich, but that’s the funny thing about wealth. It’s less about how much you make and everything about what you do with it. Income and lifestyle can easily change (as we witnessed in 2020)...
