WOW!! Way to go!! #repost roosterinthehenhouse “The borrower is slave to the lender”. As we start the new year we are officially no longer slaves to student loan debt!

Pursuing a doctorate degree to chase a childhood dream unfortunately comes with a steep price tag. Once the payments started coming in, the numbers looked insurmountable to us as a recently married young couple. With a total repayment time of 20 years and interest doubling the total amount owed, it became all too clear that minimum payments were not an option.
Around this time I stumbled across the Dave Ramsey radio show and dove in head first. I have always been financially conservative and loved the idea of my grandparents economics- “if you can’t afford it, don’t buy it!” I started talking to my wife about the show and before long we devoured a few of his books.
A monthly budget was made on the first of the month, cash was KING, and we said no, a lot. No to all inclusive vacations, no to fun nights out with friends who all too often didn’t understand, and no to everyday small indulgences that add up far too quickly.
We started with more than gazelle like intensity, smashing out each loan we could by both picking up overtime and small side jobs and saving where we could. Each red line crossing out a debt was a warning to the next! We were coming for you!
It certainly wasn’t easy! We had our arguments and difficulties often based on denying ourselves now to better our futures. It was well worth it in the long run.
We learned a lot about wants verse needs, our own personalities and desires, and to trust in our plan and one another. This could not have been done without the fortunate blessing of two solid jobs, and a strong core support system who understood our long term goals.
