Way to go! 👏
#repost @jiselalala
In January 2018, Don and I got very angry at debt, but that wasn't always the case. After undergrad, we both got full-time jobs that paid a lot (nope.) and financed new cars we thought we could afford. We put half of our wedding and honeymoon expenses on credit cards! And after all the fun, we were left paying for our past instead of saving for the future 💸 So the soul-searching and asking God "why?" began. Why was it so easy to accept that debt was normal? Why is instant gratification so hard to overcome? Then I stumbled upon Dave Ramsey, who committed his life to helping people get out of debt and live a life they love with 7 Baby Steps, and knowing that the core principles he taught came straight from the Bible reinforced my trust in the process. Prob. 22:7 says, “...the borrower is slave to the lender." Ugh, yup. So we decided to pay off the cars early and cut up allll the credit cards. Miles shmiles 💳✂️ For a year and a half, we had to be “gazelle focused.” Side gigs. Zero-based budgets. Cooking at home. Saying no to outings. The journey wasn't easy, but it also wasn't brutal, though it did take Don a while to get used to the fact that I'd question him for every one of his Funko Pop purchases 🙃 But knowing that the discipline & hard work would pay off (literally) in a matter of months made us feel so proud to no longer have a negative net worth, finally OWN our cars for real, & resist lifestyle inflation every time we got a raise. People often think financial freedom & a higher income are synonymous. This journey taught us that HOW you manage your stuff & your money plays a bigger role than the size of your shovel. We always pictured ourselves being one of those little families on The Dave Ramsey Show screaming, "We're debt free!" Those were huge motivators, but the biggest motivator was being able to pave the way for our future kids & honoring God with our money. Give first, save next, then spend. Thank you Jesus for the support of family & friends... & financial freedom as we know it! We feel blessed to have gone through this process. If we can do it, you can, too!! 💪🏼#ontostep3 #weredebtfree #earlyretirement #paidinfull
