WE’RE DEBT FREE!!!!

The feeling of freedom that we accomplished cannot be adequately described, but it is absolutely amazing! Who could imagine that reading The Total Money Makeover and going through Financial Peace University would completely change our lives?

Our debts consisted of some medical bills and mostly student loans (optometry school). Going through optometry school we figured it was “normal” to take out massive amounts of loans in order to pay for school. After completing optometry school and seeing the final amount that we owed, that number shook us to our bones.
/
Over the next two years we started diligently attacking the debt by following the baby steps. However, after two years, we started losing our focus and our determination was wavering. We thought that since our debt was just student loans it wasn’t as bad as having credit card debt or a car payment.
/
At this point we knew that we needed to do something different in order to get back to being focused on paying off the student loans. We went through Financial Peace University, and this gave us the extra boost in motivation needed to cut back in our spending and get back to being “gazelle intense” on paying off our student loans.  Over the next ten months we paid off more than half of the beginning balance.
/
The advice we would have for everybody that is still on their debt free journey: Stay “gazelle intense” and you will become just as “weird” as us and many others in the daveramsey community. Creating a budget and sticking to it is a good thing. It’s important for everyone to show up and provide input at the budget committee meeting. And, the freedom of being debt free is so worth the journey!
