We started our debt free journey following daveramsey and his steps towards financial freedom after our first son was born. It wasn't until he was born and I went back to work that my husband and I realized that what would be best for our family is for me to be a stay at home mom. We never planned for that, but we knew that was what we needed.

When we first looked at the numbers to see if it would be possible, we realized my entire months pay was just enough to cover the minimum payments of our debt (mostly student loans, cars a few other bad financial decisions). It felt hopeless. My husband suggested we read Total Money Makeover. We knew these baby steps were the only way to climb this mountain.

Here are some of the major things we did that helped along our journey:
-weekly meal planning--always include one leftover night & we treated ourselves to only one meal out a week.
-shopping at aldiusa cut our grocery budget in half
-cut out cable/satellite, internet, unnecessary cell phone add ons like unlimited data/texting
-strict limits on gifting
-live without new cars, clothes, cell phones, etc.--when we have a need, we buy it used!
-we share babysitting with our friends instead of paying for sitters using this awesome app my_komae --check it out, it's amazing!

My friends, it's hard! We had to say no to a lot of you over these past few years because doing anything costs money. Some of you look at us like we're crazy driving around a 12 year old car. We haven't been on a real vacation out of our own state since we had kids. Living like no one else sucks! But what we gained from this is a stronger marriage, a happier family life, and a bright future for our entire family.
