Raising kids while on a #debtfreejourney can be hard. We have 4 children ages 10, 9, 5, and 3. We don’t buy them toys except at Christmas, we don’t buy them new technology, we don’t throw them elaborate birthday parties, we limit their participation in sports, and we don’t take them to do expensive activities or vacations. There’s a lot we “don’t” do, but I believe that what we ARE giving them is so much greater.

We’re giving them a real life lesson that debt makes you a slave. We’re showing them that you might make mistakes, but if you take responsibility and work hard, you can fix them. We are teaching them contentment. We are teaching them that work equals money. We give them responsibilities and commissions. They can buy their own toys. You know how empowering that is for a child? This is what we give them.

When we are #debtfree I’m sure we’ll say “no” to our kids a little bit less...but I don’t think I’ll ever regret the lessons we are all learning on this journey. And you know what...my kids are HAPPY. Just look at that face! 😍

Reading “Smart Money Smart Kids” by daveramsey and rachelcruze helped me navigate this area of parenting so much. If you haven’t read that and you have kids...do it! Starting at age 3 kids can start helping with chores, earn commissions, and learn to save. My 3 year old cleans her room, straightens up the living room, and folds towels. And that money jar is all hers! 💸 She earned it! 💚
