About a week ago on Oct. 8, the Huron Men’s football team improved to a 6-1 record, via a Skyline forfeit due to COVID-19 concerns.

Although there was confusion regarding why Huron had to test and Skyline did not, sparking rumors on social media, both parties acted in their best interest.

“The biggest uproar was that people thought we were testing our football team because of rumors that Skyline had,” Huron Athletic Director Tony Whiren said. “That’s not why we tested our football players. We thought we had a situation, and we did have a situation on our hands, but we were getting it under control.”

At the time, Skyline didn’t need to test because they didn’t have any cases. However, shortly before the game, one of Skyline’s players tested positive. Due to COVID-19 tracing protocols, which resulted in other cases, they didn’t have enough healthy players to continue.

“It was really tough on their school,” Whiren said. “Super tough on our school. Super tough on our staff and super tough on our football coach. It was a super hard day for me. We weathered it, but there was no good. I think the best thing is there was no game. Neither team was ready. Mentally, I think there was a lot of emotions.”

Despite the week without a game, Huron responded with a 31-14 win over Lincoln on Oct. 15. They will wrap up their regular season this upcoming Friday as they travel to Rochester.
