“My status as a professional athlete doesn’t exclude me from racism, discrimination, sexism or homophobia. The minute I take that jersey off, I am a Black, bisexual woman in America and as Malcolm X once said, '“The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman.” —Tasha Cloud (t__cloud9)

The 2021 wnba season got underway this week and for the washmystics point guard it marked the first time she has laced up for a game in over a year. Tasha opted out of the 2020 season in order to pursue social justice reform and use her platform for something far bigger than her sport.

“It was the hardest decision for me thus far in my career,” says Tasha. “But I understood that this moment in time was much bigger than myself and my career. I’ve been given this God-given platform to be a voice for the voiceless. If I didn’t use my voice, I’d be doing a disservice to a lot of people that look like me. I wanted to be on the frontlines; not only in spaces that hard dialogues and decisions were being made, but in the community, at marches and at protests.”

Heading into the new season, Tasha is confident her work as an activist and athlete will be championed by her league both on and off the court. “The WNBA is constantly pushing boundaries and progressing the needle forward. We are consistently at the forefront of every social issue.”
