“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.” -Psalm 139:11-12

There are times when we want to curl up and hide away. Hide from the world; hide from God. To put on our shame and guilt and mope. We have those days when we want the darkness to envelop us because we don’t know what to do. We experience great shame and sadness, feeling as though there isn’t anything that we or our friends/family can do. To feel like the darkness is winning, that our sin and shame have beaten us down so far that we cannot recover. Listen! Our God is an awesome God. He reigns in Heaven above with wisdom, power, and love. The darkness is not dark to him, and the night is as bright as day. When the Lord is with us, we too are not in darkness. We experience this great light that is the LORD. Understandably, there are times when we should go on our own, to reflect and pray to God. Jesus did this in the Garden of Gethsemane. We must come to the Father to remember the love and light he freely provides. Just like Jesus however, we still need that community, we are made to be in community, and we are not meant to be alone. Jesus asked his disciples to stay awake and pray; to be that connection, that community. This is a gift that God has given to us: to uplift one another to cry together and lead one another towards the light of the Father. It is one of the ways he shows his light in the darkness. Even when we do not have others with us, he will not leave us in darkness. May he remind us of his light and presence to cast away fear and doubt.
