“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” -John 3:16-17

He is risen indeed! Happy Easter! Jesus has overcome the grave and rose again into heaven where he waits until the day of the LORD, where he will come again. This earth and resurrection was so that the broken might be made whole. There was a thief on the cross next to Jesus. He never went to church, never knew Jesus until the cross, never repented of his sins, never prayed or read scripture. Even so, he followed Jesus into heaven. This man recognized Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God and had faith that Jesus would save him. This is an example of the faith we need, that despite our past, our brokenness, failures, suffering, inadequacy, etc, we know that Jesus will save us because loves us so much.

As Romans 8 says, “there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God did not send Jesus to condemn the world; Jesus came to us to love us and to show us grace and save us. Because of what Jesus had done for us, we can live freely as we are born again and our prior sins have no hold on us.

But the ascension is not the end of the story, for Jesus is coming again and it will be even more glorious and wonderful than the birth or the first Palm Sunday ever was. For this time, Jesus is coming to bring us home to him, give us new bodies in the new heaven and new earth, and to destroy and remove sin and shame and all injustices of the world.
