Photo by johnstanmeyer | For a story on rituals tied to volcanoes, I had to let go of the question, Why do people live on or near active volcanoes? Every nuance of life in Indonesia, where I lived for more than five years, in Bali—an island shaped by fire—became more apparent. And more intriguing. Gunung (Mount) Batur, reflected in the classroom window of a primary school, is located three kilometers (1.5 mi) from the active volcano. To the question of why, the answer was always, Why not?! What more beautiful way to live and experience life, in all our fragility. Mere humans of insignificance where the ground beneath our feet, the sky over our heads, is far greater than we are.
