## Caption

Photo by Javier_Aznar_photography | A western pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius streckeri) crosses a rural road in Texas. These uncommon rattlesnakes occur in a patchy distribution from Mississippi to East Texas, where they are threatened by development, persecution, or road mortality, a fate we prevented for this snake by moving it as a car approached. Together with the other two subspecies of pygmy rattlesnake (the Carolina and dusky), they make up the smallest rattlesnake species—the dime is for size comparison—with a uniquely delicate and slender rattle that is barely audible.
