Photo by Karine Aigner kaigner | I know a few bobcats. Each is unique—from pattern to shape to personality. If one cat flees the scene when you lock eyes, the next stares you down. 

This silver male I spotted in South Texas at dusk was opalescent—glistening. On this "blind date," he was bold, confident, and completely aware of my presence on the opposite side of the pond. I’d like to say I saw him first, but it’s doubtful. As he sauntered down the ridge toward the water, his meandering was calculated—with tail curled upward, he stopped to chew grass and peer at me through spots that obscured his incredible face.

As if he had a sixth sense, his eyes landed on a deer behind him. I’d not seen it until then. He raised up and droplets flew—one by one he shook the water and mud from his paws. As he turned back in the direction he came from, he stopped once more, cocking his tail forward. He looked at me as if to say, “This is my place.” And then he was gone.
