Photo by johnstanmeyer | I lived in Bali for a time. One day I stopped at this altar-like shrine, a place I'd visited many times before on the southern side of Gunung (Mount) Batur, but no one was ever there. By chance on this morning, I met Dewi, who was giving offerings as she knelt before a ledge made from lava stone. Each day she comes to pray at the lava field, which was created in the 1994 eruption of Mount Batur. Located just 2 kilometers (1 mile) from Batur in the village of Sila Rupat, Dewi and others who live on the active volcano consider this shrine a holy place.
