Photos by Jeff Kerby jtkerby | With the UN releasing its latest report on climate change this week, the scientific community is sharing key messages with policymakers and the general public. Over the past several years, I’ve joined one of the IPCC report’s contributing authors, National Geographic Explorer Isla Myers-Smith, as she works in Arctic Canada. To her, the news is clear: The Arctic is warming three to four times faster than the global average, altering tundra ecosystems. What happens there influences the carbon cycle and climate across the planet. Plants are the foundation of tundra ecosystems, whose changes influence both wildlife and the livelihoods of Arctic people. These dynamics are currently unfolding on Qikiqtaruk (Herschel Island) in the Yukon, as coastlines erode, permafrost thaws, and shrubs expand into new areas. #Arctic #Shrubification #Permafrost
