With pandas, photographer Ami Vitale amivitale observed that where there's a will, there's a way. Having endured for millions of years, these creatures are not only adorable but incredibly adaptable. But by the 1980s, their numbers had plummeted and they were at risk of extinction. In the decades since, researchers worked on breeding pandas, augmenting existing populations, and protecting their habitat. And they’re finally having success, taking captive-born pandas and releasing them into the wild.
