Photo by acacia.johnson | Pacific walrus rest on the shore of remote Round Island, in Alaska's Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary. Here, thousands of male walrus gather each summer to feed and rest after the mating season—and they've been coming to this same spot for thousands of years. 

I took this photo in the first rays of sunrise, when the air was alive with seabird cries and the soft "chiming" sounds of walrus in the water.
