Video by joelsartore / When I met this beautiful two-month-old Venezuelan red howler monkey, it was receiving care at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Manaus, Brazil, with the hope that it might one day be returned to the wild. With fruits making up the majority of this species’ diet, the howler monkey plays a vital role in maintaining the health of the forests it calls home. By dropping fruits, leaves, and seeds to the ground as they eat, these monkeys are helping to replant the forest and provide food to species like white-tailed deer that are unable to access this food source on their own.
