Video by joelsartore / What’s in a name? For the southern coleto, it's an apt description of the bird’s curious appearance. The species' scientific name is Sarcops calvus melanonotus, and the Latin “calvus" means bald while “sarcops” is a combination of ancient Greek words—sarx/sarkos, meaning flesh, and ōps/ōpos, which translates to face or complexion. When combined, these terms perfectly describe our feathered friend—a bird with a bald face. Video taken at Eltoro Zoo de la Castellana in the Philippines.
