Photo by PaulNicklen / This image of a bear was captured  with a remotely operated camera mounted to a tree in the Yukon. I was hiding behind some foliage nearby, firing the shutter like mad while this female grizzly marked its trunk with a good rub, entirely undisturbed. To many Indigenous cultures, bears represent something spiritual, while others regard them as animals with mystical healing powers. Whenever I look into the eyes of these incredibly majestic animals, I am reminded of their vital role in many North American ecosystems.
