## Caption

Photo by Brendan Hoffman hoffmanbrendan / A bore well is drilled in a narrow residential alley in Karachi, Pakistan, to provide freshwater for residents of a nearby house. A large portion of Karachi's water supply is siphoned off illegally, meaning many residents pay for municipal water but don't receive it. They have two choices: Buy water from tanker trucks, likely supporting black market sellers or, if they can afford it and live in a part of the city far enough from the sea so the groundwater isn't salty, they can drill a private well.
